Sie kommt im Atlantik, in der Nord- und Ostsee, von Spanien bis Island und Westrussland vor, sowie in vielen angrenzenden Flüssen und Seen Europas. Vom Menschen wurde die Art zudem im Rest Europas, in Nord- und Südamerika, Afrika, Südasien, Australien und Neuseeland eingeführt. Nach der Lebensweise werden drei Formen unterschieden: die anadrom wandernde Meerforelle sowie die zeitlebens im Süßwasser verbleibenden Formen der Seeforelle und Bachforelle. Forellen sind beliebte Sportfische, Meerforellen werden auch mit Treibnetzen bejagt oder als Beifang wirtschaftlich genutzt

The trout is known in the Atlantic, the North Sea and the Baltic, from Spain to Iceland and western Russia in rivers and lakes. The species was also found in the rest of Europe and introduced into North and South America, Africa, South Asia, Australia and New Zealand. There is the anadromous migratory sea trout as well as the brown trouts, always remaining in fresh water forms.
